Delmag returns
The time machine took us back to 2002 on Thursday night (Dec. 27) as the crunching postgrunge songs of Delmag, one of Anchorage's greatest homegrown rock bands, filled a downtown club.
But this wasn't quite Delmag that legendary trio has been shut down for more than a year and hasn't even logged onto its MySpace page in two months. This was Never Quite That Low, a Delmag tribute band conceptualized and fronted by Sleep Machine's Erik Braund, who like most 20something local rock scenesters, was heavily influenced by Delmag.
Braund, who played Delmag's singer/bass player Mike Gorder, led the band through a tight set of eight Delmag classics, including "Racecar," "Finishing Fall" and "Never Quite That Low." Sleep Machine's Brandon Hafer took on the role of Delmag guitarist Ryan Brownell, femmes moncler, complete with wristbands. James Dommek of the Whipsaws didn't even try to look the part of Eric Kross few can match that drummer's intensity or musclebound looks.
Braund looked like a spoton Gorder, wearing with unassuming jeans, black zipup jacket and beanie pulled low. Braund, usually Mr. Flamboyant onstage, kept his inner rock star in check for most of the set in a nod to the stoic Gorder. Braund also tried to cover Gorder's crisp strain on vocals, but ended up sounding more like Billy Corgan channeling Mike Gorder.
The irony and comedy of the set was totally lost on this crowd, however. Delmag was a bar band, with a legion of fans who rode snowmachines and snowboarders, who partied late and partied hard, often with the band. When Braund stopped midway through the set to ask if anyone in the crowd grew up Delmag fans, fewer than a dozen hands went into the air. After the next song, a bold young girl shouted "Play a good song."
But Never Quite That Low should find a more Delmagfriendly tonight (Dec. 28) at the Anchor Pub and Club (712 W. Fourth Ave., 6777979). The free, 21andup gig starts around 10 and also features sets from Wagner Logic, Blake Huffman and Sleep Machine. Delmag members Brownell and Kross are expected to attend.
